REGLAS DEL AJEDREZ
Each of the 6 different pieces moves differently. Pieces cannot move through other pieces (though the knight can jump over other pieces), and can never move onto a square with one of their own pieces. However, they can be moved to take the place of an opponent's piece which is then captured.
The King (el rey): The king is the most important piece. The king can only move one square in any direction - up, down, to the sides, and diagonally.
The Queen (la reina): The queen is the most powerful piece. If moved she can move in any one straight direction - forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally - as far as possible as long as she does not move through any of her own pieces.
The Rook (la torre): The rook may move as far as it wants, but only forward, backward, and to the sides.
The Bishop (el alfil): The bishop may move as far as it wants, but only diagonally. Each bishop starts on one color (light or dark) and must always stay on that color.
The Knight (el caballo): Knights move in a very different way from the other pieces – going two squares in one direction, and then one more move at a 90 degree angle, just like the shape of an “L”. Knights are also the only pieces that can move over other pieces.
The Pawn (el peon):Pawns are unusual because they move and capture in different ways: they move forward, but capture diagonally. Pawns can only move forward one square at a time, except for their very first move where they can move forward two squares. Pawns can only capture one square diagonally in front of them. They can never move or capture backwards.

If the title of this article has you
stumped perhaps you should spend some
time with the M.E. Lewis Elementary
Spanish club. The group of youngsters
definitely knows how to speak Spanish,
and they know how to speak it well. A
fact that they proved on Saturday, April
24, 2010, when they traveled to
Loganville, GA to take part in their first
Foreign Language Spanish Competition.
The twelve students representing M.E.
Lewis competed against twelve other
schools. During the competition participants
stood before a panel of Certified
Spanish Educators and were evaluated
on their fluency in Spanish dialogue.
Once before the judges participants
could only reply to queries in Spanish.
Three rankings were given during the
competition; they were "Good",
"Excellent" and "Superior". Of M.E.
Lewis' twelve participants ten received
"Superior" rankings and two received
"Excellent" rankings. Mr. Fabio Clavijo,
the Spanish Club Advisor for M. E.
Lewis Elementary School, was exceedingly
pleased with the students performance
in their first competition. Clavijo
went on to express his thanks and gratitude
to the students and parents for all of
their hard work in preparing for the competition.
The students participating in the FLES
Competition were Umar Sultan, Isis
Webster, Mahnoor Sultan, Carmicheal
Allen, Rishod Hill, Ramari Lewis,
Merqez Stanton, Meagan Leslie,
Brandon Hill, Darien Worthen, and
Sammie Mayweather.
Several parents and school adminstrators
were also in attendance, they included
Drs. Melvin and Awanna Leslie, Ms.
Van'dnaWebster, Mrs.Askea Lewis, and
M.E. Lewis principal Stephanie
Birdsong.
